Repurposing Items

There are countless ways to give a second life to the odds and ends we all accumulate, and even some items that might normally end up in the garbage.

I’m getting ready to throw away…

  • Cardboard packaging can be used to form all sorts of shapes and structures. A shoe box can easily house a miniature room or scene. And clear, plastic packaging is perfect for glass panes.

  • Cut-out images can become photographs, food labels, etc. Glue-bound magazines can be carefully taken apart and cut along the spine to make books that open. Similarly, a small stack of papers can be held together while glue is applied to one edge.

  • The inside/underside of cardboard egg cartons and take-out drink carriers is the perfect texture for rocks and bricks.

  • Metal, plastic, and all shapes and sizes! Bottle tops can become bowls, pots for plants, tabletops, lampshades, etc.

  • Foam can provide a great texture for rock formations. It’s also a nice, lightweight option for filling in a space (i.e. building a hill). I’ve even seen someone paint a packing peanut to look like a bread loaf!

  • What a treasure trove! There are ways to reuse supplies from just about any hobby in miniature-making.

    • Buttons can become plates, bowls, or pans.

    • Scrapbooking paper can be used as wallpaper.

    • Beads can be repurposed in countless ways—vases, cups, furniture legs, knobs, and so much more.

    • Faux greenery makes great shrubs and plants.

    • Fabric scraps can be used to make furniture, clothes, carpets, etc.

  • Grab a pair of pliers and you can uncover a wealth of mini-making supplies! Pendants and charms can become wall or home decor. Beads can be used for vases, jars, and all sorts of small details. Necklace chains and cords can represent iron chains or rope. Plus, the leftover odds and ends are perfect for filling up treasure chests, workshops, etc.
